Yantai Research Institute of Harbin Engineering University is a distinctive innovative base jointly established by Yantai Municipal People's government and Harbin Engineering University, integrating high-level scientific research and high-end talent training. It is a major measure from Harbin Engineering University to expand its advantageous domains in ship and maritime study, and to develop in an incremental and intensive manner.

Yantai Research Institute stays committed to the national marine power strategy, seizes the opportunity of deepening the integration of industry and education and promoting the transition to new from old economic engines in Shandong Province and attaches great importance to its ‘offshore engineering’ orientation. By bringing into full play the industrial edges from HEU and catering to the technological requirements and talent demands from different sectors and enterprises, Yantai Research Institute will propose a three-pronged layout composed of offshore engineering equipment technology, ocean engineering equipment technology, and marine resources & equipment technology development. Through Project Co-construction, platform sharing and joint employment of talents, Yantai Research Institute will boost deep cooperation among universities and enterprises and in-depth integration of industry and education. A whole-chain and all-element interaction amid technology collaborative research, efficient transformation of achievements, industrial innovation and upgrading and joint training of talents will be realized in due time. By virtue of the establishment of an industrial research institute featuring highly integrated scientific and technological innovation and talent training with the characteristics of ‘offshore engineering’, Yantai Research Institute will gradually build several research centers supporting ‘offshore engineering’ development and service platforms supporting marine engineering equipment technology and sea-land tests, thus erecting the benchmark of ‘double first-class’ university service industry and talent training. Yantai Research Institute is projected to accommodate faculty and postgraduates up to 600 and 3000 respectively, form around 60 technological innovation teams, and establish 3 to 5 branches of national scientific research laboratories by 2027.
