On September 22, the world's first ‘International Marine Carbon Sequestration Industry Organization’ held its first general assembly and the first meeting of its first council in Yantai Research Institute of Harbin Engineering University, its giant leap forward in speeding up sustainable development, strengthening international cooperation, and jointly promoting innovative platforms and mechanisms for marine carbon sequestration industry.

Officials present mentioned that leaded by Yantai Research Institute of Harbin Engineering University and backed by experts and scholars ever since the establishment of ‘International Marine Carbon Sequestration Industry Organization’ last year, the number of member institutions has increased from around 50 in 12 countries to more than 100 in more than 30 countries. They wish the organization a brighter future to provide more marine solutions to combat climate change and draw more promising roadmaps to achieve global carbon neutrality.

The conference deliberated and approved the charter of the aforementioned organization and documents relating organizational structure, developmental plans, work plans, etc. The first vice president and secretary-general were elected through voting, and the secretariat was formally set up.

Directors of Yantai Research Institute said that they would help ‘International Marine Carbon Sequestration Industry Organization’ prosper, with the hope to explore new paths of industrial development with attending experts and scholars, and reaching a fabulous prospect, bringing global green and low-carbon marine industry to a higher level.

Government leaders pointed out that as a national pilot city for carbon peaking and a exemplary city for green, low-carbon and high-quality development in Shandong Province, Yantai has always unswervingly followed the path of ecological priority and green development, actively dealing with climate change and sustainable development, and worked with others to acquire green, low-carbon and high-quality development.

At ‘2023 Conference of Green, Low-Carbon and High-Quality Development’, International Marine Carbon Sequestration Industry Organization was established in Yantai. Carrying out  research in strategies, policies and plans, providing decision-making support and advice, implementing scientific and technological innovation and transformation in marine carbon sequestration are all its purposes. It will surely put forward ‘Chinese wisdom’‘Chinese voices’ and ‘Chinese solutions’ for this industry by means of multilateral participating mechanism that will promote international communication and cooperation.
